Genetically Modified Food - Symbolic sculpture

Description

Okay, last sculpture for now (and probably for a while)!
In my sculptures class we had to make a sculpture about a controversial topic, but our teacher didn't want us to use a well-known one like abortion, drugs, or same-sex marriage (unless we'd had a personal experience one or knew someone who did).
It had to be abstract; we could use real objects (or... make them), but it couldn't just be like- an apple with DNA on it with an X over it. Had to be more symbolic than that. xD Um, it was made mostly from cardboard (that's right, I had to cut out all those shapes x__x), but the DNA is made from plastic colorful bendy wires (I have no idea what they were actually called), the syringe needle is made from a thick piece of wire, and the stem of the pear is an actual stick. I painted it with acrylic.
Now I'm just gonna copy/paste my 'artist statement' so you can learn a bit more about this without me having to think about explaining it (because I already did that in the thing I'm about to paste!)

Topic:

• Genetically modified food

Why I chose it:

• It was something I never thought about before, but that probably affects us every day;
we are probably eating genetically modified food without knowing it half the time.

Symbolism:

• The pear represents food. The makeup brush painting the pear symbolizes that
although genetic modification can make food look good, but the fact that the pear
looks rotted and not very appetizing symbolizes that that notion is deceptive and fake,
because it can actually be harmful. The syringe symbolizes genetic modification, and
the skull crying DNA represents the harmful effects GM food can have on you. Finally,
the lips symbolize that many people blindly consume GM food each day, without even
knowing it.

Pitch:

• Although the idea of GM food appears good on the outside (because the food can be
made pest-resistant, can grow under harsh conditions, etc.), it has actually barely
been tested, and the tests that have been done have have shown kidney and liver
damage in mammals. GM foods are also not labeled as such, because they are
already more expensive than regular food and labeling them would make them cost
too much. Finally, there is a moral question involved - is it right to tamper with food
genetically? I believe the answer is no. For these reasons, I believe no one should
eat genetically modified food.

*End copy/paste*
...Enjoy! xD
